HELVETAS Mozambique initiates a national event on sanitation

On November 15th and 16th 2017, the think tank for the water and sanitation sector (GAS) organized an event on the theme "How to make sanitation sustainable". The event was organized in the city of Nampula and initiated by HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation in order to present its post-open defecation free (ODF) approach.
The opening of the event was made by His Excellency, the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources with the presence of his Excellency, the Governor of Nampula province. About 150 people from the Northern provinces (Niassa, Cabo Delgado and Nampula) and from Maputo participated in the event.

The event was divided into two parts: on the 15th a field trip was organized to give the participants an opportunity to understand the local realities and on 16th a plenary session was held. On this second day, after the reports of the field visits, the National Directorate for Water and Sanitation DNAAS presented the national sanitation strategy which is being developed with the support of international consultants.

HELVETAS made a presentation of its post-ODF approach which was developed based on the results of a RANAS survey.
The debates that followed confirmed the need to identify new approaches for ODF communities not to go back to open defecation. HELVETAS took advantage of this event to promote the replication of its innovative approach, but also to collect ideas for the improvement of its own implementation.
